Show Exception Taken To Information in Article by M. J. Miles By AD ANDERSON In answer to a few so-called 'facts" that appeared in the issue f the News Shopping Guide by ft. J. Miles. The answer to paragraph three Is: Why doesn't Salt Lake City, Ban Francisco, Cedar City and Los JAneles put in municipal plants? tThese are all cities with a population popu-lation that in itself would pay more revenue than the City of Bt. George could pay. Los Angeles adopted Boulder Dam power instead in-stead of muncipal home-owned power plants within their own city. In answer to paragraph four: Vhy did the City Council and Mayor', who are behind this deal, sign a contract, as has been written writ-ten in previous issues, with the plot zacker-Burton company, offer give the engineer the job of in-Stalling in-Stalling at 5 of the proposed $300,000 municipal plant, yet JVTathow M. Bentley, who is recognized rec-ognized in our state school system Bs one of the best and smartest mathematicians couldn't recognize jlhat set-up until it was pointed Out to him. The answer to paragraph six, Is: How much power bill does tylr. Miles pay? What would Mr. Miles say if he walked into a cafe or drove into an electrically equipped equip-ped service station under a municipal muni-cipal plant and have the power turr, off at seven o'clock or 8:30 O'clock in the summer on account Of n too heavy load for the set up lo take care of. Ia regard to our water plant in paragraph seven, we do not own our water. Nature owns the jvater we pay taxes to conduct the water to St. George City. If the Bonding Company is willing to ftiavo our city engineers build a cyst.'m that will be profitable to them so that they can get their money back, why is there a 5 Clause in the contract for the engineer en-gineer ? Where is the money going to come from to help support our Schools if the bonds of a municipal plant aren't taxable ? Do you townspeople, you average aver-age citizens, who have a meager Income, want to pay more for your son's and daughter's textbooks text-books and school activities? You will do so if the tax that is being put on us by an outside company, as Mr. Miles calls it, is taken (rom St. George. Does the City of St. George promise to reimburse those taxes? .NO! Why should we trust our city officials to put this deal through If they have to have the Bonding company manage their proposed municipal plant affairs, when they pull such boners as have been mentioned in previous issues, namely, to give the Bonding company com-pany engineer 5 of the $300,000 for installing the plant, if that is the case. Who can stop them from making the rates as high as they want them to be. As you know, and if you don't know, you can easily provethis statement by writing the Public Utilities Commission of Utah. The Public Utilities Commission can not stop the Bondholders from RAISING the RATES. Think that one over, Citizens of St. George! Does Mr. Miles know the characters char-acters and lives of our City Council, Coun-cil, and why can't men of great character be easily misled in regards re-gards to a slick deal such as was herein before mentioned of the 5?c clause? Why should Mr. Miles want to bring character Into this deal? This is not a political issue. I say, give the City Council Bnd your Citizens Committee a chance to prove who is right. Do this by picking two men from thei City Council, two from the Citizens Citi-zens Committee, and two men who are undecided and let them canvass towns who have municipal plants one councilman, one citizen citi-zen and one neutral in a group, door to door and get an unbiased report of what the people consider the better their present set-up or the one. they relinquished. Fellow citizens of St. George, think of your family and yourself ! first. |
