Show Dr. Arvil Stark of U.S.A.C. Gives Pointers On Gardening In Southern Utah Those who failed to hear Dr Arvil Stark of the U.S.A.C. at the last meeting of the St. George Gardener's club, missed a rare opportunity to gain the very information in-formation they have been seeking, state members who were present. Even though the group was small Doctor Stark gave his full lecture with many points expressly in the interest of local problems. Much appreciation is expressed for his helpful advice. Among other items, Doctor Stark stated he believed the Elderberry tree and Olive tree, two productive evergreens, would do well in this section and recommended recom-mended the planting of them. He also suggested the growing of pyracanthus from the cuttings, stating they were easily started in a mixture of sand and peet moss. His pointers on the planting plant-ing of shrubs and vines, the growing grow-ing and pruning of hedges and types to use in this area were just what have been wanted, says Lola McArthur, president. The major part of his talk was devoted to the necessity of keeping keep-ing up the premises, the repairing of fences, painting of buildings inside and outside, the neat arrangement ar-rangement of yards, and satisfaction satisfac-tion of properly kept surroundings, suggesting that in this work, more perhaps than in any other field, it was the stitch in time which (Continued on page eight) Dr. Stark Speaks (Continued from first page) averted the extra effort later. Because lawn growing locally has many problems in keeping the dandelions, water grass and other weeds from smothering it out, Doctor Stark gave many worth while pointers in the planting and cultivation of lawns. Among his recommendations were the need of smooth planting surface, the advantage of frequent cutting, suggesting at least twice each week and leaving the clippings on the lawn to build up a rich turf and smother weed growth; keeping the borders trimmed; planting desirable flower borders; keeping the area around plants free from the grass, and proper methods of destroying weed pests in lawns. He gave the formula for destroying earth worms and ant hills in lawns. |
