Show Southern Utah Stockmen Attend Arizona Meet Wayne Gardner, chairman of the Southern Utah and Arizona Livestock Live-stock association, with representatives representa-tives from Iron and Kane counties was called to attend a meeting by the Arizona sanitation sanita-tion committee on July 24. The meeting was in answer to a protest filed by stock interests of the three counties represented over inspection and taxes on animals taken from Utah to Arizona. Mr. Gardner explained that the last Arizona legislature passed a law requiring all stock that enters the state to pass certain tests and be taxed five cents a head to pay for this inspection. Arizona officials admit that the law was aimed at stock that was being brought into Arizona from New Mexico because of certain diseases that this stock had. They also recognize that fact that these diseases are not found in the Utah stock and that the local stock doesn't come in contact with the (Continued on page four) Livestock Meeting (Continued from first page) anirnals from any other part of the state. Since approximately 100,00 head of sheep and goats are moved across the line each year, this tax would amount to a considerable sum. The movement of this stock is necessary due to the fact that Utah is a summer range and Arizona a winter one. Stockmen point out that they own rights in Arizona and pay taxes on their property there and" also on the stock for ' the amount of time that the stock is in Arizona. |
