Show Mrs. Philena Pickett Dies Here Today After Six Weeks Illness Mrs. Philena Pickett, 68, widow of the late Horatio Pickett, prominent promi-nent choirmaster and musician of early days of Dixie, died at her home in St. George at 11:45 today to-day (Thursday) following a lingering linger-ing illness. She had been confined to her bed for six weeks before death came. Born in St. George November 29, 1871, she was the daughter of Isaac and Ann Newling Hunt. She gained her early education in the district schools of St. George, and from young girlhood she was a member of the St. George stake choir, training under John M. Macfarlane, Joseph W. McAllister and Horatio Pickett. She was a relief society worker, her last duty being to complete her ward teaching, June 18, 1939. She married Horatio Pickett in the St. George Temple August 8, 1895. Surviving Mrs. Pickett are four daughters, Mrs. Philena Hall, of Pine Valley; Mrs. Ann Hall, of Hurricane; Mrs. LaVerne De-Swan, De-Swan, of St. George and Mrs. Una Anderason, of Ely, Nev., and one son, Paul Pickett, of Alamo, Nev.; 17 grandchildren. Of her husband's children by his former marriage are three daughters and four sons: Mrs. Josephine Workman, Work-man, Hurricane; Mrs. Harriet Woobury and Mrs. Susannah Gub-ler, Gub-ler, LaVerkin; Leo Pickett, of Los Angeles; Henry Pickett and Ellis J. Pickett, of St. George and Charles Pickett of Salt Lake City. Also, two sister, Mrs. Martha Terry, of Alpine, Utah, Mrs. Susie M. Terry, of San Francisco, and a brother, Isaac Hunt Jr. of St. George and the following half-brothers and sisters; sis-ters; Mrs. Louise Jacobson, Mrs. Emma Cox, Mrs. Partha M. Cannon, Can-non, Mrs. Addrell Carter, all of St. George; Mrs. Mary A. Gubler, of LaVerkin; Mrs. Rachel Cox and a brother, Isaac A. Hunt of Los Angeles. Funeral services will be held in the south ward chapel with Bp. Andrew McArthur directing, at 4 p.m. Friday. |
