Show Pioneer Day Fete Proclaimed Best In Years Well Balanced Program Holds Interest Of Young and 'Grown-Ups' Featured by the honoring of the Pioneers, a bathing beauty contest, con-test, sports for children, baseball game, old time dancing and regular regu-lar dancing, St. George fittingly celebrated the Twenty-fourth on last Monday. The program was termed one of the best events of this kind held in St. George in many years. The day started with a salute at daybreak under the direction of the Legion and musical numbers num-bers by the martial band and the old time dance orchestra. It was followed by a program honoring the pioneers under the direction of the D.U.P. Children's sports and horseshoe pitching next took the stage and the baseball game followed in the afternoon. The old time dancing, bathing beauty contest con-test and regular dance closed the day's program. Old Time Dancing The old time dancing drew a large crowd and received considerable con-siderable applause. Those in the dance were the D.U.P. group, dressed up in the old style clothes, WPA representative dancers dan-cers and the Rotary club. While the judges awarded the first prize to one of the WPA groups, a considerable number of the audience would have given the D.U.P. dancers the prize. Two WPA groups and the Rotary club danced the Virginia reel with a WPA group getting the prize after the two groups were asked to dance a second time. While the Rotarians had to insert a "ringer or two" which help they appreciated, they insist that had the dancers been there that were supposed to have danced, they would have made just as good a showing. Erastus Higgins called for the dances and assisted in the day's program. Grant Whitehead, county WPA recreation director, took an active part in the sports and old time dancing and the WPA workers with their old time orchestra, helped to make the day a success. |
