Show 50 Years Ago June 4, 1931 Although Uintah County has experienced ex-perienced some unusually severe setbacks set-backs characteristic of the period of depression all over the nation, we are in far better shape than many of the counties of the state and many communities com-munities throughout the west. The people of the county, as a rule, are stable and many are independent through their foresight during the past era of prosperity. While other communities com-munities are facing bankruptcy we are still in a very sound condition financially. finan-cially. We are receiving reports that there will be a decrease in the assessed valuation of the state of seventy million to one hundred million and Uintah county coun-ty shows less than a four hundred thousand thou-sand decrease from present estimates and some have the opinion that our valuation will be equal to a year ago. Wilford Caldwell, a well-known La-point La-point man, contracted typhoid and pneumonia while shearing sheep near Baggs, Wyo., and was brought home on May 13. Everything possible was done for him, as he grew steadily worse and succumbed to his brief illness May 29. In honor of President Wallace Calder, Earnest Eaton and A.G. Goodrich, the outgoing stake presidency, and Driver E. Smith, clerk, there will be a social at the Imperial Hall, Tuesday, June 9. At J.C. The picture "Trader Horn." shown at the Vogue Theatre last weekend was one of the most interesting pictures ever brought to Vernal. This picture and "Cimarron" shown recently at the theatre are considered two of the outstanding pictures of the year, according ac-cording to Mrs. Edith R. Cooper, manager. The story of the picture "Cimarron" has been running serially in the Express for several weeks. |
