Show DUP hears history of Marie Robbins The last meeting of the season for Camp Vernal DUP was held at the Golden Age Center May 22, with Jean Guy, Darlene Evans and Erma Weeks as co hostesses. A salad lunch was served to thirteen members. Captain LeOra Jacobe gave the schedule for helping at the DUP Museum for the summer. Camp Vernal will make the corsages and serve as hostesses at the "Builders of Uintah," dinner in July. The summer party will be held in August. The history of Marie Neilson Rob-bins, Rob-bins, grandmother of the late Stan Robbins, was read by historian Mildia Jones. Mrs. Robbins was born in Denmark, June 10, 1857. In 1866 the Neilson family was converted to the L.D.S. Church. Mr. Neilson borrowed $500.00 to bring his family to the United States. They experienced many hardships. She said it seemed they were always hungry. At Christmas there were no gifts. A loaf of white bread was happily accepted as their Christmas Cake. She walked most of the way across the plains, arriving Oct. 6, 1866. In 1867 the family moved to Gunnison Utah. She attended school about 12 weeks and then had to go to help support sup-port herself. She married Leonard A. Robbins, when she was eighteen years old. They had four sons and four daughters and also raised three grandchildren, whose mother died when they were young. She lived to be ninety-four years old. The lesson was given by leader, Mary Freeman. Several stories were told of the Young, Kimball and Snow families, who were early converts and pioneers of Utah. Meetings will convene again in September. |
