Show BASEBALL BRIEFS Steve Carlton improved improv-ed his record to 8 wins and 0 losses with a 6 to 1 Philadelphia win over the St. Louis Cardinals, Sunday. Sun-day. Carlton pitched nine innings, allowed five hits, one run, walked three and struck out six batters. The Phillies had 11 hits in the game. Pete Rose and Dick Davis were 2 for 4. Manny Trillo and Larry Bowa were 2 for 3. Gary Matthews and Bob Boone drove in two runs each. The Cardinals jumped out to a l-0lead, but Philadelphia scored three runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the seventh. Trillo had a double dou-ble for the Phillies. No homers were hit in the game. Rookie right-hander Gene Nelson combined with Ron Davis and Rich Gossage on a three hitter as the New York Yankees edged Cleveland 1-0 Saturday. Nelson, 2-1 at 20 the youngest player in the major leagues, walked walk-ed four and struck out two before being relieved by Davis in the sixth inning. Gossage relieved in the eighth and got the final five outs for his l.'Hh save, tops in the majors. The Yankees had (right hits in the game and Graig Nettles and Jerry Mumphrey were 2 for 4. Oscar Gamble drove in the game's only run. Miguel Dilone had two of Cleveland's three hits. |
