Show Some fishermen encountered good luck and. a few experienced bad luck during the opener in the general fishing season, Saturday in Utah. One fisherman fisher-man baited his hook with cheese and fired the line into the Green River below the Flaming Gorge Dam and a few seconds later a fish was knocking at the door. The fisherman tried to reel in the monster, which was leaping in the air, but at the last moment the reel started to come loose from the rod and the fisherman turned his attention to his reel, which was about ready to depart. Just as the fisherman had his reel under control his fish decided it was time to leave as it broke the line and took hook, line and sinker with it into the Green River. The fisherman was forced to try, try again for another fish. , One fisherman tossed his line into the Green River and discovered that he had hooked his net. However, the fisherman didn't lose his net as he reeled it in for his only catch of the day. Brothers, Glendon and Rynnen ' Lamb, and Janel Lamb had a fun time fishing at Bullock Reservoir with their father, Richard Lamb during the opener. The only item that bugged the boys was that their sister, Janel, gained a fish before they did. It was her first fish of her life. Janel caught her fish on cheese and her brother said to their father, "Why did you give her cheese?" and the dad remarked, "I only had one cheese hook." People learn the sport of fishing at an early age in the Uintah Basin. 20 month old. Sheila Bird, helped her father, Dennis Den-nis Bird, hold on to the fishing pole during dur-ing fishing action at Bullock Reservoir during the opener. Ray Harvey of Vernal hooked a fish at Steinaker Reservoir and now it was son Mathews turn as he was in charge of the net. He got the fish in the net, but the fish escaped as there was a hole in the net. However, the fish stayed on the line and the aquatic animal was brought to shore. One of the biggest fears for members of youth baseball leagues is dropping a fly ball. If an outfielder drops a fly ball he has to have some excuses ready for his baseball buddies. Excuse number one. The sun was in my eye. Excuse number two. I misjudged it and it went over my head. Excuse number three. I forgot my sunglasses. Excuse number four. I thought the other guy was going to get it. Excuse number five. I lost track of the ball. Excuse number six. My father was at the game and he made me nervous. Excuse number seven. My mother was at the game and I was nervous. ner-vous. Excuse number eight. My mother and father didn't show upforthe game and I was depressed. Excuse number nine. I thought it was a homer. And, excuse ex-cuse number ten. It wasn't my fault. Another fear for a member of a youth baseball league is striking out at any time, so many of the batters are just as happy to stand at the plate and watch the baseball sail by because many of the pitchers have control problems and a walk is as good as a hit. However, don't get carried away with watching the baseball whiz by because the only way a person can gain a base hit is by swinging at the white object. Walks are important, but getting a single, double, triple, home run or grand slam on errors er-rors is a lot more fun. The sport of youth baseball has changed a great deal since the mid 10's. The baseball players of today have nice, fitting uniforms and each player usually has his own glove. This reporter, Aldon and his brother, Orlie, played in the Little Ix-aguc program in Roosevelt. Our father, Orlando Rachcle, txwght us one glove and we had to share it. My brother was on the Lions and this.reporter was on the Colts. Col-ts. When we played each other we would cross in front of home plate and exchange the glove in between innings. Baggy uniforms were worn by each player and it seemed that there was enough room for the entire Pacific Ocean. The uniforms were usually a couple of sizes too big and were probably pro-bably worn by Babe Ruth. Each uniform had sponsors on the back and that was okay, but the main problem was that many of the sponsors had been out of business for many, many years. How would you like to be sponsored by a sewer service or fertilizer fer-tilizer company. Baseball was the name of the game and gelling the chance to swing at n baseball made it all worth it. |
