Roosevelt continued its dominance of Helper this season as they blanked the crew from Carbon County, 2-0, August 6. Fieldsted gave up six hits, but never more than one in any single inning. He struck out ten and walked one. Murray struck out five and walked two. The Roosevelt team was elimnated from the tournament when they were blanked by Highland, 9 to 0, Thursday. The Roosevelt crew posted a 2-2 record in the tournament. Roosevelt's baseball coach, Lynn Patterson, said that some people thought that Roosevelt didn't deserve to be in the state tournament. Skyline, the fourth place in Valley League, which includes Salt Lake City schools, Tooele and Cyprus, was Roosevelt's opponent in the first round. "It was nice to beat the big guys. It helped to prove , that we deserved to be there," stated Patterson. "We came out and really hit the ball in the first two innings. Tracy Dye started the game, but he reinjured his elbow and Brent Fenn replaced him. Skyline scored four runs off of Fenn, but then he got warmed up and settled down. Chip Johnson had three hits in the game, two singles and a double. Everyone hit well in the game." The Roosevelt crew was still thinking about their first round win over Skyline and thus they were thumped by Granger, 12 to 2, in the second round. "We didn't hit at all," stated Patterson. Roosevelt toppled Helper, 2-0, in the third day in the tourney. "Mick Fieldsted was the winning pitcher. He pitched the entire game and allowed only six hits. Roosevelt gained its only runs in the fourth inning. Fieldsted doubled and Brent Fenn singled. Troy May drove in both runs with a single up the middle," said Patterson. "Helper had several chances to score, but Fieldsted came through with strikeouts on 3 and 2 counts and our defense gained ground outs. Fieldsted had his best performance of the year." Patterson added, "We ran out of pitchers in the 9-0 loss to Highland. Roosevelt ended up in the top eight in the tournament and we lasted longer than other Utah County League teams such as Provo, Orem, Springville, and Helper and Salt Lake City teams such as Kearns, and Skyline. Chip Johnson was our leading hitter at .500. Mick Fieldsted also hit pretty well in the tourney." |
