Quarry to feature open house, Sunday The second annual Discovery Day Open House at Dinosaur National Monument will be held at the Quarry Visitor Center Sunday, August 17, from 6 to 10 p.m. According ' to park officials, Discovery Day, is a new annual event to commemorate the original discovery of fossil bones at the Dinosaur Quarry, August 17, 1909 by Earl Douglass. "The purpose of the open house," said Joe L. Kennedy, superintendent, "is to give visitors and area residents a chance to get a 'behind the scenes' look at quarry operations and to learn a little more of the history of this scientific treasure." The open house will begin at 6 p.m.' with a special blacksmithing demonstration demon-stration inside the quarry laboratory. Tobe Wilkins; a member of the monument's staff, will demonstrate some the tool-making skills he has picked up over the last 27 years while working at the quarry. Other events will include an historic photo exhibit, special talks inside the quarry on the early history of the site, and a commemorative program at 8:15 p.m. According to Chief of Interpretation, Denny Davies, the 8:15 program will feature a "Fashion Show" of the seven most common geologic formations of the quarry areas; a live interview with Sally the Coelurosaur (a kind of dinosaur); and a slide program focusing on the quarry operations during the Earl Douglass excavations between 1909 and 1923.
