A lot of "pep", was . shown by both teams and witk Ue luck breaking about even, the Lapoint mine showed that they were in good shape for a long and lasty battle. David Curry pitched for the home boys and did well and would have won the game had he bad better support. However, our boys deserve much credit, considering the short lime they, have had for practice and we are sure within a short time they will be able to give a much better account of themselves under the management of Dr. Stevens. It is up to the general public to get out and support the team , and help them win. y . J -4 Credit should be given City Marshall Byron Eaton for the excellent work done on the park grounds as they were ' in splendid condition. Clive Davis has' been elected captain of the tani and is putting the boys through soroe hard .. ' practices for the 5th of July games.. GAME FROM LAPOLNT ; Vernal won last Saturday's ball game from Lapoint by a score of 7 to 3. This was a fast and clean game and our boys demonstrated to all local fans who at- r tended the game that we have a fast . bunch of players on the lineup, wfeo : have the championship marks hanging about them. From the beginning of the first inning the local boys fielded everything possible. Frank Swain's pitching pit-ching kept the Lapoint boys guessing for the entire nine innings... , With the lineup that Vernal has now, we feel sure they will give a food account ac-count of themselves on the 5th and 6th ' of July as Vernal is to play Watson pn the 5th on the local grounds and with the Indians at Roosevelt on the 6th. Vernal started off like big leagues in the first frame. First three men up getting get-ting a safe hit, followed by Critchlow placing one for two bases, but even with the big lead gained they were unable to hold the Watson boys in range, and from then on up until the last inning it didn't look., so bright for our boys. However, that one chance was all they ,. needed.' As the first three men up clouted the ball for safe ones and then well everyone knows what happened. They are still looking for the ball. And at the final count the score was 19 to 16. The biggest game of the season will be played on the home grounds Saturday Satur-day between our boys and the Indians of Fort Duchesne. This is a return game and the boys are going to spread the war paint on in great style. The boys are anxiously waiting for their new suits to arrive which were ordered some time ago by manager Stevens. The team showed up very strong in a practice game Thursday evening. Vernal won the battle with the Indians In-dians and the story follows as it was printed in the Vernal Express on July 30, 1920. VERNAL TEAM SPANKS INDIAN BASEBALLERS-SW AIN PITCHES CONSIST ANT GAME FOR LOCAL BOYS Vernal came back strong last Saturday Satur-day and swamped the Indians to the tune of 17-10 at the local ball grounds. However, the redmen were minus several players including the pitcher and catcher. Swain and Thorum were the battery for the local boys. Pat Markey's home run was the feature of the game. Clive Davis swatted swat-ted a three bagger in the early part of the tussle. A sensational catch by the second baseman of the opposition brought applause from the Vernal stands. Hits were freely made thoughout the game by the Vernal men because of the un-organized condition of the Indian battery. Swain pitched a consistant game and allowed few hits and walks. A large crowd attended the game which did not begin until 4 p.m. because of the wait for the Ute battery. It is probable that Vernal will meet the Indians on their own field in the near future. |
