Show Couple pick-up litter along Flaming Gorge roadsides An interesting phenomenon occurred this spring in the Flaming Gorge Recreation area along Wyoming Highway High-way 530 near the Henry's Fork River. Helen and Joe Schmial were observed picking up litter along the roadside by Gene Ruble, a law enforcement officer for the Forest Service at Flaming Gorge. Gene, who is called "Rube" by his friends, was so delighted by the situation he turned around and stopped to see what would bring about such pleasant and seemingly unusual behavior. He introduced himself and learned that Helen and Joe are both retirees of Hill Air Force Base and make their home in Clearfield, with a summer home near Manila. Rube learned that the Schmials enjoy doing their part in picking up what litter they can, and as a fringe benefit they save any aluminum cans for their grandchildren. No doubt Rube's mind raced with visions of that great recreation area in the sky filled with visitors such as the Schmials, indeed a heaven. It was obvious that the event affected Rube, and his hopes for the here and now, as the smile on his face seemed to be a little broader with a few more teeth showing through. |
