Uintah defeated three championship teams Uintah High School's wrestling team defeated three teams during the past season then went on to capture first place in their state tournaments. The Utes were nipped by Nampa, Idaho, 21 to 18 and the Uintah team downed Nampa in the Vernal Tournament of Champions. Uintah placed first and Nampa nabbed third place. The Utes 4oppled Rock Springs, 25 to 22, in a dual meet and downed Rock Springs in the Vernal Tournament of Champions. Uintah placed first and Rock Springs nabbed second place. Uintah placed fifth in the Green River Tournament and Star Valley nabbed seventh place. Nampa captured the A-l State Wrestling Tournament in Idaho with a total of 165 points. The Nampa team had one first, two seconds, two thirds and four fourths. Nampa's Lamond Thueson placed first in the 138 pound weight class. Also nabbing first places were: Mike Lamb, 98, Blackfoot; Tom Hugie, 105. Blackfoot; Zane Jones, 112, Skyline; Randy Heyrend, 119, Skyline; Stan Armstrong, 126, Pocatello; Danny Pugmire, 132, Meridan; Dan Bicandi, 145, Meridian; John Bauman, 155, Lewiston; Bill Bauman, 167, Lewiston; Brent Johnson, 185, Burley and Angelo DiLulo, unlimited, Boise. Following Nampa in the team standings were: Skyline, second, 132; Blackfoot, third, 102V, Meridian, fourth, 99V, Lewiston, fifth, 81; Burley, sixth, 57V Boise, seventh, 52V Pocatello, eighth, 47V Highland, ninth, 46 and Caldwell, tenth, 39. The Idaho A-2 title was nabbed by Weiscr with 1 13 1 2 points. Preston placed third at 91 and Shelley nabbed fifth at 79. Uintah wrestled both Preston and Shelley in the past few years. Preston had two first place champs in Roger Wright, 105 and Cordell Anderson, 126. Shelley's Brian Walter placed first in the unlimited class. Rock Springs garnered the Class AA State Wrestling Tournament title in Wyoming with 149 points. Casper Natrona placed second at 145 and Green. River nabbed third place at 110 "points. Riverton placed fourth at 54 points. Nabbing first place crowns were: 98-Gil 98-Gil Sanchez, Cheyenne Central; 105-Dan 105-Dan Arguello, Green River; 112-Bob Hower, Rock Springs; 119-James Chick, Rock Springs; 126-Bill Hodges, Green River; 132-Steve Knezovich, Rock Springs; 138-Mike Reamer, Casper Natrona; 145-Scott Chip-perfield, Chip-perfield, Rawlins; 155-Doug Cozzens. Powell; 167-Ab Brown, Natrona; 185-Pat 185-Pat Bush, Laramie and heavyweight-Fred Bath, Rock Springs. Star Valley captured first place in the Class A. Wyoming State Tournament with 126 points. Nabbing first place titles for Star Valley were: Todd Jensen, 98; Blake Lancaster, 132; Jed Miller, 138 and Scott Welch, 155. Uintah defeated Meeker, Colo., in the Steamboat Springs Tournament and in the Rock Springs Tournament. The Utes and the Meeker Cowboys tied in a dual meet at 21-21. Meeker placed fourth in the Colorado Cass AA State Tournament at 99 points. Rocky Ford placed first at 149' a and Fort Lupton netted second at 143 points. Wray nabbed third at 137V Steamboat Springs placed sixth at 69 points. Joe Ramunno, Steamboat Springs, 185, garnered first place. Fort Morgan nabbed first place in the Colorado Class AAA Tournament with 85".! points and Wheat Ridge placed second at 80'a points. Harry Willden of Montrose placed first in the 145 pound class and Castle Rock's Mike Knox, 185 and Matthew Friend, 119, also place first. The Uintah Utes pocketed first place in the Utah Class 3-A State Wrestling Tournament with 1314 points. Brett Brown, 98; Jeff Good, 119; Randy Smuin, 145 and Ken Cobbs, heavyweight, placed second. Matt Hacking, 138, nabbed third place. Ron Horrocks, 105, placed fourth and Foston Chivers, 112, nabbed fifth place. Following Uintah in the standings were: Box Elder, second, 124; Davis, third, 110V, West, fourth, 103V, Woods Cross, fifth, 77V, Viewmont, sixth, 69; Jordan, seventh, 68V Springville, eighth, 66; Pleasant Grove, ninth, 65 1 4 mid Cyprus, tenth, 62. Union High School of Roosevelt nabbed fourth place in the 2-A tournament with 70' points. Delta placed first at 124W points. |
