Show Vernal Boxing Club garner victories The Vernal Boxing Club competed in their first match of the season when they took part in bouts in Salt Lake City at the Elks Lodge No. 85. After a shakey beginning, Jason Langley's bout was stopped by the referee. Langley is six years old and took part in the 50 pound class. The referee is instructed to halt bouts in Junior Olympics if it appears any harm could be done to a boy. Eight year old Larry Harrison, 70 pounds, fought the best bout of his career, according to Steve Paulson, when he scored a lopsided decision over Robbie Montoya of the Police Athletic League. Harrison gained revenge for a previous loss to Montoya. , Bennie Moore, 11 years old, 75 pounds, won a squeaker over Flynn Paulson, nine years old, 75 pounds, in a bout involving two Vernal boys. Flynn had not even been in training, but he agreed to the fight as a last minute substitution. David Giese dropped a hard fought decision to David Montoya of the P .A.L. "As can be expected with first time matches, David simply ran out of gas after easily winning the first round," stated Steve Paulson. Felix Espinoza lost a decision to Danny Halpin of P. A.L. "The bout was very close and could have easily gom either way. Many in the audience fel that Felix should have been awardec the decision," remarked Stev Paulson. "Felix scored a knockdowr over Halpin in the first round." The final Vernal contestant was 141 pounder, Norman Powell, in the senior open division. Powell scored a decisive victory over Phil Bolin of the Utah State Prison. Norman battered his opponent until the referee was forced tc stop the bout in the second round wher Bolin was unable to continue after taking a second standing eight count. Seconds in the ring for the Vernal Boxing Club were Steve Paulson and Sammy Hatch. Harold Langley, Keith Harrison and Tex Giese handled all of the preparatory work, which was necessary to get the boys ready for their bouts. "The most impressive factor was the poise and determination displayed by the Vernal team. The Vernal Boxing -Club established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the future," stated Steve Paulson. The Vernal boxing Club will compete in matches at the Utah State Prison on June 27 and at the Utah State fairgrounds coliseum in Salt Lake City, July 4. |
