Show Manila I .Clara Robinson I Phone 784-3463 V .. 4-H judging clinic to be held A 4-H judging clinic will be held at the Manila High School at 2 p.m. on June 19, Thursday, under the direction of Denis Hamm, Sweetwater County demonstrationist. This clinic is for Manila and McKinnon home economics girls. Mr. and Mrs. Grant Pay and children have moved to Santaquin, Utah, where Grant has found employment. Wednesday night the Manila MIA girls enjoyed a swimming trip and refreshments in Green River, Wyo. They also went to the Geneological Library and saw films on geneology. Their chaperones were Carol Ann Briggs and Claire Reed. The Covington Company oil rig which was located south of Manila has moved, but another one is expected. Last week Manila had a new high in temperature, but since then it has dropped slightly every day until Sunday Sun-day it was 76 degrees for the high and the low had dropped from 46 to 37. These temperatures were at the weather stations, but some places in Manila and surrounding areas reported a slight frost when the station had 37. There has been no measurable precipitation since June 2; however, a few drops fell Sunday about noon. There has been some wind in the evenings. The highest wind was just before 7 p.m. Saturday. It blew a great deal of dirt, broken tree limbs, and blackened leaves on trees and other plants. Dr. Jim Van Slooten, chiropractor from Salt Lake City was seeing patients at the Senior Citizen Center Friday evening and Saturday morning. He will be in Manila again on July 11 and 12. Dr. Larry Wilcken of Vernal will be seeing patients at the Senior Citizen Center in Manila from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on June 20. Mrs. Thomas Cook underwent surgery in the Rock Springs Hospital Wednesday and is reported doing well. Mr. and Mrs. Cloyd Reed attended Boy's State in Logan at the close of Boy's State week to see the graduation exercises for their son Curt. Mrs. Elsie Twitchell became ill this weekend and was taken to the hospital in Vernal early Monday morning. Manila High School Boy and Girl Staters are home from their camps and reported they had a very enjoyable time and learned a great deal. The Girl Staters Kristee Briggs and Michelle Charette had the longest distance to go. They left Vernal at 4 a.m. Sunday morning and reached Cedar City 8 hours later. Their pictures appeared in the Deseret News on June 2. The Girl Staters were divided into cities. The cities were named after Utah's governors. Kristee Brigg's city was "Moss" and she was given the position of City Auditor. One of her duties was to collect fines for such things as not having your name tag or not having a clean room. She was also judge of election. She said she was able to see how a trial was held as they had a mock murder trial with real lawyers presenting the cases. Miss Charette's city was "Miller." She was City Commissioner and also county delegate. Mostly as city commissioner she assisted the secretary. Curt Reed and Mitch Ford were the Boy Staters from Manila High School. Boys State was held at USU in Logan. Curt was judge, judge of election and a county delegate. Mitch Ford was the Central County ' Commissioner and National Party Secretary. These boys and girls were sponsored by the Daggett County Lion's Club. Several changes were made during Sunday service in the Manila LDS Ward Relief Society and the Primary. New officers for Relief Society are president, Delores Redden with counselors WaNeta Lamb and Juanita Ellsworth. Those released were Betty Tinker with counselors Janet Weeks and Ester Larsen. In Primary new officers are Diane Jackson, Kathryn Stewart and Connie Haney. The out going officers were Nihla Payne, Diane Jackson and Jill Neff. |
