Show Financial Help Heeded in Fight Against Cancer Rapid progress is beinj -(made in the search' for a cancer cure but financial support is faltering just when it is needed most, a national na-tional television personality told Utah volunteer workers for the American Cancer Society. So-ciety. Ed Reimers, an ACS volunteer volun-teer and a familiar face on family television screens as an announcer ih commercials, commer-cials, noted that cuts in federal fed-eral research have hurt the search for a cancer cure. Ha urged increased support fromi the state's citizens. Nearly 200 volunteers from! 41 different county units J from throughout Utah met at the Rodeway Inn in Salt Lake City February 12-13 to hear Mr. Reimers and receive re-ceive training and materials for the fund raising crusade in April. A goal of $1,600 was set for the Grand County unit in the 1970 campaign. Attending as delegate to the conference from Grand County was Mrs. Delberi) Long, County Unit Chairman. Chair-man. The conference also featured fea-tured Dr. Stanley Mancus, professor of micro-biology at the University of Utah, who described some of the latest cancer research being be-ing pursued by scientists. Delegates also were shown training films, presented with educational materials to Ibe distributed to homes throughout the state and took part in workshops to help them lead an army cf 17,000 cancer volunteers in the April crusade. A panel of high school students stu-dents also took part on the program. They discussed the problem of smoking among teenagers in the schools and the influence on each other. The two-day conference was under the direction of E. Lamar Buckner, OgdMi businessman and stale legislator, legis-lator, who is serving as state crusade chairman for 1970. More than $200,000 was raised by the Utah Division of the American Cancer Society So-ciety in 1969 the first time the division had topped thai long-sought goal. Funds raised during the crusade will be used for pub-1$2 pub-1$2 education programs1 to help people become more conscious of their own health, ifor scientific research into the cause and cure of cancer can-cer and for helping Utah cancer victims.
