Show Devils Squeeze by Green River; Gain Post-Season Playoff Berth Moab"s Red Devil cage squad finished up league play with a squeeker win over Green River Tuesday night. Final score was 47-43 which was good enough to push the team into the post season playoffs wth a 6 win-4 loss record. Coach Ward Curtis stated that the reason for the close score, which saw Moab with a 1 point leadwith a minute and 33 seconds left to play, was just that the boys seemed seem-ed to be off and didn't play their usual style of ball. In the statistics department, Moab gave up 23 turnovers compared to only 10 for Green River. The deciding factor was in the rebound department de-partment where the Red Devils captured 51 while the Pirates grabbed only 18. High point man for the Devils was Jeff Cowan with 10 points and he was the only man in double figures for the team. Following Cowan were Sam Scharf and Rick May-nard May-nard with nine scores each. Mike Daniels tallied 8 points for the squad. The Devil hoopsters upset San Juan in another close game held last Thursday by a score of 59-57. High point man for Moab was Rick May-nard May-nard who dropped 17 tallies for the Devils. Scoring remained re-mained almost even throughout through-out the first half of play with the big Red holding a 29-28 halftime lead. The Devils took as much as an eight point edge in the third period, but Blanding came back 'to score on 10 of 11 free throw tries in the final quarter to almost even things up. San Juan, with only three losses, compared to Moab's four, has already been assured of a berth in the State playoffs. The Devils will meet the loser of a playoff between Union and Uintah in a tournament tourna-ment to be held here this Saturday. San Juan will meet the winner of the Ute-Cou-gar tilt. Game time for Moab is 6:15 p.m. and for Blanding Bland-ing play will start at 8 p.m. The purpose of the meet will be to determine third and fourth places from Region 6. |
