Show Pedestrian Injuries Given Traffic Study One of Every Five Persons Hurt in 1939 Accidents Foot Traveler, Survey Shows By BOB HALE About one of every five persons injured in Salt Lake motor vehice accidents in 1939 was a pedestrian. Sixty-eight per cent of victims of total accidents were pedestrians. pedes-trians. Pedestrians often were at fault. These were findings gleaned Monday from cold facts given in official reports on the city's 1437 traffic accidents last year. Accident diagrams, prepared by Special Investigator G. M. Hopkins Hop-kins of the police traffic division tell a story of pedestrian accidents. Diagrams are being made for every Salt Lake intersection having five or more accidents ast year, as a means of planning enforcement enforce-ment and other measures to prevent future mishap. Diagram Enlightening The accident diagram for Second West and South Temple streets is a revealing one. The Telegram selected it partly because it concern con-cern the city's "thoroughfare of death" Second West street. On thii arterial and its components Beck street and the Victory road cutoffhave cut-offhave occurred seven of the 24 deaths in Salt Lake City ince January 1, 1939. Five of the seven persons killed on this highway system were pedestrians. The diagram, reproduced here, shows four pedestrian accidents in 1939.
