Show , , 1 Nation's Best Golfers Open San Francisco Tournament SAN FRANCISCO. Jan. 17 W With a brilliant field of more than 200 of the nation's best pros and amateurs on hand, the $5000 San Francisco match play open golf tournament got under way today with the first of two 18-hole qualifying quali-fying tests. Another 18-hole round will be played tomorrow over the Lake Merced layout, and the 32 survivors sur-vivors will go into match play competition com-petition Friday and Saturday, with the 36-hole finals Sunday. The third big tournament on the professional winter swing drew a record entry list. Many of the shot-makers shot-makers played In the Los Angeles open two weeks ago and last week's Oakland open, but aside from these were such aces as National Na-tional Open Champion Byron Nelson Nel-son of Hershey, Pa.; Harold "Jug" McSpaden, winner of the recent Philippine open, and George Von Elm.
