Oct 2 (UP) -Held In check for two periods, St Mary's Galloping Gaels got their touchdown machine into working order in the second half to beat Gonzaga, 19-0, Sunday In the Gaels' opening football game at Kezar stadium. During the first half the Bui -dogs kept Slip Madigan's Mora-gam Mora-gam at bay, and it wasn't until the third period that the Gaels' running run-ning and passing attack got under way, with Herb Smith, fullback, and Ed Heffernan, halfback, taking tak-ing the lead. Taking the ball on their own 45, the Gaels pushed to the Gonzaga aix-yard stripe in four plays. On fourth down Jackie Sims went over for the score, carrying four Gonzaga linesmen with him. After an exchange of punts In the fourth period, St. Mary's got the ball on Its own 20-yard line. Heffernan passed to Guthrie for 10 yards. Bettencourt gained four, then Heffernan drove through the Gonzaga line and went to the one-foot one-foot marker. From there he plunged through center for the second score.
