Warden Owen Nebeker said the first trail led In the direction of Barstow, Cat, where Cushman 's father and brother reside, and the second, a vague trail built largely on supposition, pointed north from Proyo. The warden said Cushman's left thumbprint was found on a package pack-age of dgaret. papers discovered in an abandoned automobile left a half block from the Union Pacific Pa-cific railroad yards In Prove early Saturday. This shows that Cushman was In the automobile, which was stolen from Mrs. Eva Olson at Union late Friday night," Warden Nebeker reported. "Mrs. Olson reported re-ported to me she received a telephone, tele-phone, call from an unidentified person. Inquiring about her son, shortly before the car was stolen." The warden said Mrs. Olson's son had known Cushman slightly.. Warden Nebeker said Cushman may have left Provo at 3:35 a. a. Saturday on a freight train bound for LynndyU where he could have hoarded - another tram forBsr--stow. Nevada and California authorities au-thorities and railroad police are cooperating in the search, the warden said. "Cushman may have tried to outguess pursuit, however, and doubled back from Provo," the warden said, adding that several "leads" were being checked. The fugitive, serving a term for third degree burglary, climbed te the top of a cellhouse In the prison yard Friday night, traveled handover-hand along high tension power pow-er lines and fled over the south wall, as a guard In a near-by tower sought te halt him with shotgun, slugs. Warden Nebeker said the convict con-vict apparently waded down a gully south of the prison to prevent pre-vent his tracks being traced. In the gully he apparently was soaked and his dgaret paper package pack-age and match container were wet, thus providing pursuers with the first definite clue to his trail. |
