Ky, Oct 2 (UP) The federal government today dropped Its criminal prosecution of Harlan county (Kentucky) coal operators, coat companies and former for-mer law enforcement officers. It said It did so because "industrial peace at last prevails." "An Impossible and medieval Industrial In-dustrial system, which the operators opera-tors had sworn to perpetuate, is ended," declared WeUy K. Hopkins, Hop-kins, special assistant to U. 8. Attorney At-torney General Frank Murphy, In presenting the government's motion mo-tion of "nolle prosequi" before U. S. District Judge H. Church Ford. "The rule of the so-called 'gun thugs' Is no more." Hopkins' motion ended the government's gov-ernment's first effort to put "teeth" In the civil Wagner labor relations act by proscuting the coal companies, officials and law enforcement officers under an 1870 "reconstruction days" criminal statute forbidding conspiracies to restrain persons from enjoying rights or privileges guaranteed by federal laws. |
