Show Storm Floods S. L Residences As Clogged Sewers Back Water Firemen Pump Out One House, Only to Have It Deluged Again After They Leave; Silt Remains When it rained Sunday in the oOO block on East Fifth South street, residents sought shelter in their homes. But they were 'soaked anyway. Torrents of water, backed up by clogged sewers, poured from plumbing outlets. Monday morning the water was 18 Inches deep in the basement apartment of Mrs. F. H. Luce. 8S1 East Fifth South street, even after the fire department had pumped It out Sunday night Next door, at the residence of Nancy M. Tolman, 841 East Fifth South street, the situation was somewhat better on the main floor. The water was gone, but the silt remained. Outside, street department workers work-ers still were laboring to unclog drains late Monday. Mrs. Tolman, her brother, S. Fred Kershaw of the same address, and her daughter, Mrs. Wlllard Jordan, 120 College place, were preparing Sunday dinner when the deluge struck. "It poured from every pipe In the house," Mrs. Tolman said, "and before we hardly knew what had happened the water was two feet deep snd rising over the bed. "The fire department spent several sev-eral hours pumping us out, but as soon as they left, the house filled up again." |
