Show Sugar Tariff Hearing Urged WASHINGTON, Oct 2 VP) Senator O'Mahoney D Wyo.) today to-day renewed his contentoln that the state department must hold new formal hearings before considering con-sidering any reduction in the Cuban Cu-ban sugar tariff. He said that western beet growers feared a reduction re-duction was contemplated without notice. In a letter to Secretary Hull, O'Mahoney took the position that Informal representations are not sufficient but that formal hearings should be held. "There Is no authority," ths senator sen-ator commented, "for a reduction of the tariff except under the reciprocal re-ciprocal trades agreement act It seems evident that ths state department de-partment wants to preserve Its freedom to act under hearings held last January, but conditions have changed to such an extent. In my opinion, that those hearings are not now sufficient" |
