While swimming in the spillway pond In City Creek canyon yesterday, Bernard Colwell, 7 years of age, the son of O. J. Colwell, 'H Zanc avenue, a student of the Lafayette school, entered water beyond be-yond his depth and was drowned before the eyes of two playmates, both six years of age. One of the boys who witnessed the drowning is said to be Richard Johnson, 5f0 Columbua street. The Colwell boy, according to -the boy's father, who is employed in the construction of the Olift building on Main and Third South streets, was last seen by his two playmates attempting at-tempting to regain his footing while being be-ing swept into deeper water by the current cur-rent of the st ream which flows into the pond. Frightened when they did not see the Colwell boy rise above the water, the two iHds hurried to the city water station near by and told employees there of the occurrence. The police were immediately notified and Traffic Sergeant J. H. War-i War-i den arrived at the scene shortly afterward. after-ward. He attempted to recover the body by diving, but was forced from the water by do Id temperature! The body was found by divers at nearly the exact spot where the Johnson boy and his companion reported they last saw hubbies rising to the surface of the water. The search covered a period of six hours and grappling hooks and drags were used by the police and city water department employees in an attempt to raise the hodv A decision had been reached by Chief of Police J. Parley White, who personally per-sonally conducted the search, to blow out the spillway and drain the pond entirely en-tirely when the bod' was found.
