A Chorus of about 2"5 voices, with an orchestra of some thirty pieces and four soloists, under the direction of Professor Pro-fessor P. Cecil Gales, head of the music department of the university, pr-eson'.ed an Interpretation of tho work that was in the main highly cerditable and roce.iwd hearty applause from the capacity audience. audi-ence. "Ossian" is short nnd full of dramatic Interest. It is, as statod in the opening lines, "A tale of the times of old, of the deeds of other years," but there is nothing in it that can hy any stretch of the lin-inat lin-inat ion lie called oraioriolike, as t lie printed promm styles it. -Margaret Summenuivs, soprano; Esther Pamela, alto; David Recce, tenor, and P. Melvin 1'etersen, baritone, were the. soloists, solo-ists, and, whether singing . singly, in quartet or witli the chorus, were always at ease and in good voice. The chorus (lid its best work in "Soiead the Feast" and in the finale, "The Chiefs of Other Times Are Cone." The em by Miss Suinmerhays was her rendition of "Star oi descending Night," while Mr. Reese excelled in "O Strike the liarp," and Mr. Petersen's finest selection was that descriptive de-scriptive of the death of Ossian. Professor Gates conducted throughout in an able manner and the orchestra work was generally pleasing. Other numbers on the program that preceded the "Ossian" were t he Weber concerto, by Miss Joy Sorensen, a pupil of Professor Tracy Y. Cannon; "Meditation" "Medita-tion" t from "Thaifi"). by Miss Dorothy iHmyon, pupil of Miss Romania Hyde; two numbers by the D. P. S. orchestra; the Baeii prelude and lira hms's Kiivst Rhapsody, played by Miss Ruth Stewart, pupil of Li da Edmunds and winner of the L. I"). S. I', school of music piano prize. Miss Stewart, though only Id years of age, showed a breadth and clarity of interpretation far beyond her years. |
