"Welterweight Champion Jack Brltton and Ted Lewis will resume their endless Punch and Judy show Monday night at the Armory , j A. A. of Jersey City in an eight-round bout. j The most curious pair of boxers in the history of nusilism will meet for the nineteenth time. No two men were ever obsessed in the same manner that Jack and Ted are. Their main Idea of life is one long-drawn-out series of battles be-1 be-1 twecn them. Ted Lewis wants to be champion again. Jack Brltton answers that he Intends remaining the champion. Rut that's all surface effusion. "What Jafk arid Ted both mean is that they want another scrap. . Spice of Life. ! Some mortals depend on love to keep ; their feet steady on this little mud ! sphere called the earth. Ted and Jack ; get their salt of life by mauling each i other. j Britton and Lewis met several years asro in a twelve-round bout in Boston, in which the Englishman carried off the decision. The next time they met was in New Orleans in a twenty-round fight, in which Britton defeat! Lewis in a splendid splen-did performance. Then began a long series of scraps between be-tween them no-decision affairs. Lewis, who is only a youngster, improved im-proved with every battle. On June 25, 1017, the two met in a twenty-round bout to a decision, and it wan Lewis's fight all the way. Ted was champion again. Another series of fights between the two began. In a majority of their matches the margin of superiority for the victor was very small. Britton Puts Ted Out. But on March 17 last Britton, determined deter-mined and aggressive, knocked Lewis out, retaking the championship. Lewis never had a chance in that meeting. Britton Brit-ton landed punches at will and Lewis reeled like a drunk. Lewis claimed afterward after-ward -that he was sick with the vellow jaundice and that Britton never would have defeated him if he had been a healthy man. Lewis spent some time In the hospital after the fight, sending out wails that he wanted revenge; that he was vry, very sick when Britton knocked him out; that he wanted to prove that he was sick by getting another crack at Jack and showing what he could do when he felt well. And so, after four months of verbal persiflage, Ted gets his opportunity to come back on Mondav night. |
