Show ! Uncle Sam to Sell Cognacs Taken by Army (Chicago Tribune Cable, Copyright) COBLENZ, July 27. Uncle Sara lias gone into the liquor business busi-ness here on the Rhine. The amy has half a million jags corked up in 200,000 bottles of cognac which it has confiscated as contraband dur-" dur-" ing the seven months of occupation. This high power booze is for sale to the highest bidder. Its wholesale value will average 20 marks a bottle, a grand total of 4,000,000 marks. That is what it is worth in Germany. The only person or persons, company or association, bar, cafe, weinstub or institution allowed al-lowed to sell cognac in these parts is Uncle Sam. At that the business was forced upon him. Of the cognac to be sold, 1.50,000 bottles were seized in one lot. They were hidden under a few hundred tons of coal on one of the hundreds of barges which are towed up the Shine every day. The smuggler not only lost the goods and received fines of 100,000 marks, but was put up in the military prison during the period specified for repentance. |
