Show VOLUNTEERS WANTED. Uncle Sam needs 50,000 men for overseas over-seas service. Many of the soldiers already al-ready over there are entitled to discharge, dis-charge, but they cannot be sent home until their places are filled. With a population of one hundred millions, the United States should never be short of men for army service. Nevertheless, the average American would rather work than be a soldier in time of I peace, and it may bo difficult to assemble assem-ble 30.000 volunteers at this time. It would be vastly different if a call was issued for fighting men, for hundreds of thousands of willing troops were cheated out of a chance fo win immortal glory by the caving in ef the lluu morale and the signing of the armitice. Guard duty along the Khine doe not fill the bill. Farmers throughout the country are clamoring for the return of their boys, and it is undoubtedly true that the serv-I serv-I iocs of the husky young fellows are badly bad-ly needed juot now. We have had a mild winter and seed time is at hand. So, if there is any possible way to release re-lease the farm laborers, tho government should discharge them at once. But, as before stated, we mut have men to 'tako their places, and, -unless volunteers volun-teers come forward, we do not poo how the present tension is to bo relieved. Perhaps the necci-sary number of men would enlist if the time of service in the regular army were shortened. |
