The start of the United States navy 's attempt to cross tho Atlantic ocean on a hoavier-than-air machine will take place on the first clear day in May, -or as soon thereafter there-after as the fos belt which now envelopes en-velopes tho Newfoundland coast shows s'lK'ns of clearing, according to a statement state-ment issued tonight by the Manufacturers' Manufac-turers' Aircraft association, which claims to havo definite information from Washington. Observations placing little reliance in favoring winds because, at the altitude of 2000 feet, which is expected to be the average on the trip across, available data shows that only eight days during May, and then only for a quarter of tho time, is thore a strong wind bearing to tho east.
