Show FOOLISH STATEMENT. The other day Dr. Hert-, the Prussian Prus-sian finance minister, made sar''atie reference to the United States as a military mil-itary power, saying, among other things that as we could not swim or fly over the ocean, it would be impossible for us to get a formidable army into France. Dr. Franz Mehring. an independent inde-pendent Socialist, refuted the finance minister, calling attention to the fact that Canada, with less than 9,000.000 inhabitants, had thrown a quarter of a million soldiers into Fiance, who were not able to swim or fly. The Socialist then asked the finance minister what grounds he had for supposing that the United States, with a population of 110,000,000, did not have any military capacity. The minister, of course, was unable to advance any argument to bear out his foolish statement concerning the American Amer-ican army, but said he still believed it could not come over. This particular Prussian minister, like all the other Prussian officials, is endeavoring to persuade the people of the Teutonic countries that there is no danger of our getting men enough over there to settle the war. Tho people believe such statements and will keep on fighting. Sooner or later ' they will see enough men in khaki to convince them that they have been fooled to the top of their bent. |
