Y., was today assigned to take charge o; the western department, with headquarters at San Francisco. Major General BeM recently returned from a tour of inspection abroad. On his return from Kurope. The .statement was made yesterday that he had passed this examination. It was learned later, however, that the medical hoard had recommended a period of strict diet, because of some minor ailment, and i his is believed to have been the reason for his assignment to the western ue-, ue-, parturient. Army orders today announced the removal re-moval of Major General George T. Hart-lett Hart-lett from that rank in the national army and his reversion to his o!d rank of brigadier brig-adier general in the regular army.
