Show WILL RELEASE ' BIG LEAGUERS Ball Players at Great Lakes Likely to Be Discharged Dis-charged Soon. GREAT LAKES, 111., Dec. 8 The sea has lost its charm for Mr. Wiseguy Gob here. Two months 'ago he was dreaming of one , thing principally to enter the high seas in search of submarines. When the kaiser quit cold, calling in his under- I sea craft, the Gob immediately proceeded 1 to change his one supreme Idea. Ten former big leaguers here had planned to go to sea, but now plan to go home instead. All, With one exception, excep-tion, probably will be given their release before Christmas. One of these, Bernle Roland, pitcher of the Detroit Tigers, already al-ready has been discharged from the navy and is speeding home. Besides Poland, who left last night, the following former major lenguc players are up here and may be released from the navv soon: Fred Thomas, third baseman, Boston Red Sox. Thomas was given a furlough last summer in order that he might participate par-ticipate with hla teammates in the world's series. Joe Leonard, third baseman, Washington Washing-ton Senators. Leonard was one of the first big leaguers to enlist In the navy. Ben Dyer, third baseman, Detroit Tigers. Like others of the major league family, Ben has one idea now that his services are needed more in baseball than In the navy. Felix Choulnard, outfielder and all-around all-around man. Felix says he can play any position and is a free agent. Connie Mack might do well to send a scout to , the Great Lakes and look Felix over. Lieutenant John Levari, shortstop. Washington Senators. Lieutenant Levari recently announced his permanent rollre-nipnt rollre-nipnt from baseball, but word comes from Washington that Manager Clark Gnflltn has a strong argument to persuade the navy officer that his best Interests lie on the bll field. I Urban Faber, Chicago White Sox, will soon be handed his release from the navy, perhaps, and he will be back with the White Sox trying to hurl them to another world's flag. ' George Cunningham, pitcher, Detroit Tigers George admits he would rather seek strikeout victims and help Cobb win a pennant for Detroit than be a sailor. Bill Johnson, outfielder, Philadelphia Athletics, is about the best all-around athlete In the United States navy, and t).p Gbs are going to lose some star when he leaves. |
