"WASHINGTON, Dec. 8. Immediate passage of the woman suffrage amendment amend-ment in recognition of the services rendered ren-dered by tho women of the country dur-, ing the war was urgexl upon the. senate in a resolution passed at a meeting here today called by tho National "Woman Suffrage association. The efforts of American women in support of the country's coun-try's fighting forces were described by a number of speakers, including Dr. .Anna-Howard .Anna-Howard Shaw, Mrs. "William G. McAdoo, Mrs. Josephus Daniels and Miss Jane Delu.10, director of the American Red Cross. Dr. Shaw spoke of the pledge of loyalty and service to the government given by the National "Woman Suffrage association when this country entered the war, adding that it has "faithfully Kept that pledge, helping in the world struggle for the same fundamental principle which has underlaid its half -century of endeavor." en-deavor." "Now the war is won," Dr. Shaw continued, con-tinued, "there lies before us a vaster work than ever before, and the co-opera-1 tion and service of women Is necessary to its accomplishment." Mrs. McAdoo said the history of American Amer-ican women during the war "is the last word, the direct and conclusive proof of their fitness for self-government." ! Mrs. "Daniels asked If American wo-j wo-j men. a ft er having helped so vitally to make tho world safe for democracy, should not now be given a greater opportunity oppor-tunity through the ballot to make it a safe place in which to rear the coming generations of boys and girls. Miss Delano spoke of the valiant work of American nurses at the front, who, she raid, had "established a new tradition tradi-tion for bravery in action, many of them having earned the highest honors which the world has to offer." Other speakers lepresented women who have worked in various Industries dur-I dur-I ing the war. each voicing an appeal for I their enfranchisement on the ground of i their proved devotion to the ideals of i America and their self-sacrificing labors. |
