Show STEEL COIflf TO OBEY ORDER Bethlehem Corporation Objects Ob-jects to War Labor Board's Examiners. NEW YORK, Dec. S. The national war labor board made public tonight an order denying . the request of the Bethlehem Steel company "that the board's exam- I Iners be withdrawn from the company's 1 machine shops and that, we be permitted i to make the necessary arrangements of our working forces to meet the new peace- time conditions." The order, which was in the form of a letter to K. G. Grace, president of the Bethlehem Steel rompanv. signed bv William Wil-liam II. Taft and Basil M. Manly, joint chairmen of the board, took sharp issue with Mr, Grace's statement that the company com-pany was "unable to adopt" the finding of the examiners in favor of the machine shoD employees, "as it was preceded by the cessation of hostilities." The board characterized his letter as a refusal to respect the authority of the ' war labor board, "which," it was declared, de-clared, "would continue until President Wilson proclaimed the signing of the peace treaty." and insisted that its findings find-ings be carried out "fully and promptly." ; Mr. Grace's attitude, the board held, involved the good faitli not only of the Bethlehem Steel company, but of the government as well. Asserting that its action in assuming supervision of labor problems at the Bethlehem plant resulted from representations represen-tations of war department officials that conditions In the Bethlehem Steel company com-pany were greatly endangering the successful suc-cessful prosecution of the war, the hoard said it had "exerted everv resource" to keep the men at work. Mr. Grace, it was said, personally approved a system of collective bargaining which "brought about greater industrial effort on the part of the workers. "You now wish to repudiate that svstem of collective bargaining," the communication communi-cation says, "and ask that the board's examiners be withdrawn. "The findings of the board do not re- i quire you to continue in your emplov- ; ment any man whose services are no i longer needed because of the cancellation of war contracts. The board does require, re-quire, however, that you carry out in good faith the findings of the board upon the basis of which your employees consented con-sented to remain at work, and thus maintained main-tained the production and profits of your company. "If the award should now be repudiated, repudi-ated, your workmen would have every reason to feel I hat they had been deceived de-ceived and grossly imposed upon by your company, by the war labor board and by other government officials who persuaded them to remain at work on the assurance assur-ance that they would be justlv dealt with."
