Show SAYS HE BORROWED GOVERNMENT FUNDS Benjamin L Tweed Gives Himself Up, Saying He Could No Longer Stand Strain. CHICAGO, Aug. 5. Benjamin I. Tweed, who claims that until recently he was postmaster at Waverly, Wash., told PostofTice Inspector Germer, today, that he had borrowed government funds. Tweed is in custody here, having hav-ing given himself up last night because, he said, his conscience could no longer stand the strain. Postal authorities are investigating. Tweed claims that his peculations at Waverly have not yet been discovered. Tweed waived examination and expressed ex-pressed his willingness to return to the west. He was placed under bonds of $1000. Tweed told Thomas Smith, dep-ritv dep-ritv United States marshal, that ho took the funds tp cover money spent in cabarets caba-rets in Seattle. |
