Claiming that he was hard pressed for money at the time and insisting It was the only Institution he has defrauded, Joseph H. , Abbott, alias H. B. Mullln, alleged to be i wanted throughout the country for whole- : sale swindling, confessed this afternoon to George F. Cleveland, a detective of 1 , Salt La Ice, to having passed worthless checks upon the Continental bank of that ci ty. According to Cleveland, Abbott told him that lie would plead guilty to forging checks at the Continental bank, but contends con-tends he knows nothing of the other swindling Jobs in Utah, which he is alleged al-leged to have committed. One of the 1 most discouraging events for Abbott since his incarceration here occurred yesterday, yester-day, when John F. Do re. his attorney, severed connections with him and start- ed proceedings in the superior court against Abbott to recover $250 for services. serv-ices. Abbott had 200 on his person wiien arrested, and he said that his funds have been exhausted and that he wants to hurry back to Salt Lake, where he may reimburse himself. "I have many friends -in Salt Lake, and will have no trouble raising money," he said. When authorities searched the apartments apart-ments occupied by Abbott at the Washington Wash-ington hotel, following his arrest, a physician's physi-cian's grip, containing many instruments, was found.
