"Rosa was only a few feet from me , when the crash came," lie said, "and the others were working near, but I used all i the signals and received no answeu The i only sound I heard was the digging in the j rescue drift." . i Earth Still Moves. Yesterday afternoon a new complication arose to retard the rescuers. Earth and j rock began'to fall upon them as they dug j their way into the mine. Several times ! they narrowly escaped death, and at last it became necessary to brace the drift with timbers every few feet. Goaded by despair, men worked until they dropped. Their places were taken bv others. The crowd at the mouth of the drift thinned. One after another relatives of tho entombed miners broke down and were led away hysterical. Only men ready to aid in the work remained. In the homes of the entombed men, wives, sisters and mothers sat siient. The children, a3 yet unaware of the fate of their fathers, were sleeping peacefully. Only mothers and wives waited iu the darkness. Funeral arrangements have been completed com-pleted partially for John Knipe and John Hewson. The bodies are at the Wallace undertaking rooms. Services will be held for Hewson today at the Episcopal church. The Rev. Mr. Rite will officiate. I The cave-in at the Oklahoma stope is ! the worst in the history of the Eureka i camp, It occurred shortly after 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The twelve miners : were hopelessly buried. The crash came almost without warning. -But one man j escaped, John Wick, a Finn. He told of j seeing the lights extinguished, and rush- ing for safety. The concussion of the i slide threw him to the ground, but he escaped uninjured. Shortly after the news of the slide became be-came known, mothers,, sisters, wives hurried to the mine. A rescue gang at once set to work, hoping only to recover the bodies. At S o'clock last night the body of John Knipe was found. At midnight the rescuers res-cuers brought out the body of Jack Hewson. Hew-son. ' Knipe was covered only lightly with earth. Hewson was buried under tons of ore and timber. Both men were instantly killed by the concussion. Tlie rescuers continued digging, and, early this morning the tappings were neard. |
