The president took the position that inasmuch as Mr. Brand is an American citizen. It is his duty to remain neutral and not engage in activities that are calculated to cause irritation. The German Ger-man government has the same opportunity oppor-tunity to send or delegate a committee to present Its side of the case to the l.mted States, and If the German government govern-ment decides to take this step, it ls understood un-derstood the president will willingly receive re-ceive the committee. The president feels that the case of Mr. Brand Is covered by his recent appeal ap-peal to American to remain strictly neutral in the war and neither bv word nor deed to stir up HI feeling toward either side. In the president's Intimation. Intima-tion. Inasmuch as the signers of the petitions are German-Americans, thev are presumably American citizens and as such should heed his appeal. During the day the president notified Senator Lewis, through whom Mr. Brand asked for the appointment, that wbiie he felt unable to receive Mr. Brand hi person, he would receive any communications communica-tions the Chieagoan had to make. |
