J II 13 'hardest two days of the trip jj to the Grand Canyon of the Cul-I Cul-I orado by The Tribune Grand canyon can-yon tour, followed tho early morning start from Panguitch going Komli. Fur two days it had rained more or less and it was doubtful if we would ever get through. The roads were ol an unimproved nature, climbing climb-ing over a high summit south of Pan-gvuteh Pan-gvuteh and through a stretch of mud ilaU known, as Sink valley, which stalled the lightest, of wagons whan in a muddy ttate. Leaving j'anguitch we hadi hoped to reach Kanab that uight, a distance of -about seventy-fivo nines, but in this we failed by ne'arly twenty-Jour twenty-Jour hours. Hardly had we left Panguitch than iv ran inio a mudiiole that held us up lor two hours. Tho rain had left a t.a. all lake in tho middle of the road :.iid it was impossible to eet through. While in this position the Eck-strom Eck-strom car plunged into the mudholc and promptly stuck. A team pulled the nathiindcr out, and then Frank jM'oore's big car tried it and mired in the same .place where the pathfinder was a few minutes before. Water on the magneto did the business. The team was then hitched to both cars and pulled them out, and also helped tho other cars across to dry land. Cloudburst Next. Within an hour afterward a heavy cloudburst, followed by hail, hit the part, but the road surface was of a hard, gravelly nature, and did not materially delay the party. Wc had hoped to get to Alton for lunch, but did not reach that town un-ti' un-ti' 3 o'clock, and immediately pushed on for Kanab, where, we were 'informed by telephone, a monster celebration awaited us. Sink valley was still ahead of us, but we found this drv, and .although the road was rough, wo were able to get through without much trouble. On arriving at the head of .Johnson's canyon wc encountered the worst high centers on tho trip. For two hours we fought these with shov-cis, shov-cis, picks and axes and then gave it up, taking to the sagebrush and Building a new road. Darkness overtook us and wo camped out for the first time, eating a lunch wc had carried from Panguitch. Pan-guitch. Kennicut in Quicksand. .Early the next morning, without food or water, wc began the trip to Kanab. Farther down tho canyon water was needed for the radiators and. some was located in pockets at the bottom of the dry Johnson creek. G. W. Kennicut jumped from the top of tho bank on what ho supposed was a sandy ledge, and sank below his hips. It was quicksand quick-sand of the most dangerous kind. In an instant three or four of the part' were to hiB rescue and pulled him out. We got water there, which some of us dTank. Breeden Jumps Bank. The next incident of the trip was fortunate, in that it did not nave a fatal ending. On arriving at the small town of Johnson, it was necessary to css a bad waBh with a difficult turn at the bottom. Roscoe !M. Breeden volunteered vol-unteered to drive Dr. Bullock's car across, tho doctor having injured his arm in cranking tho car. Being a strange car and hard to steer Breeden missed the crossing and divod over a ten-foot bank. Tho car struck on tho radiator, standing on its "nose," balanced back and forth for a second and then foil back against the bank. If it hod gone forward it would have probably resulted in a serious accident ac-cident and crushed Breeden beneath it. The car lit in tho same kind of quicksand quick-sand that had enveloped Kennicut earlier ear-lier in the day. This snved tho car from serious injury. It took a telegraph polo, about twenty men and two hours of time to get tho car up on the bank again. Iso more serious damage than a bent radius rod resulted from that plunge. The party stopped hero for dinner, t and had one of the best meals of the trip, porhaps because It was the first time they had sat down to a table since the morning before at Panguitch. Delay of Day for Gas. The trip to Kanab was a short and uneventful one. Here wo found that the entire town had turned out to wel-como wel-como us a day lator than we had expected ex-pected to arnvo thoro. However, thev informed us the spread of the nieht before be-fore would be ready for us. On arriving at Kanab we found that tho gasoline which was to take us to the -brand canyon had not arrived, al-thougn al-thougn it had left Marysvalc a week beloro we left Salt Lake. Bad roads had made freighting slow and unrelia Wc. Wc sent a team back to meet tho wagon, with instructions to travel all night. This helped us and the gasoline gaso-line reachod Kanab the day after wo arnvod. The time, however, came in handy, as it gavo us a day to go over our cars and get roady for the final dash to tho canyon. |
