E. 7IGUS In the trying siege of Vicksburg, Whero a thousand comrades sleep, They dug their way to victory Through trenches long ami doop. They heard tho roar at Perryvillo. That belched from caution mouth When Bragg 's retreating army Was driven further south. From Lenoir on to Knoxvillo, hi battle's wavering tide, They fought the hosts of Longstrcct From field and mountain-side. They marched with gallant Sherman From Atlanta to the sea, And suffered in the hardships That made our country free. Near the Spotsylvania courthouse, They rcmomber yet too well, That yawning bloody angle Where their noble brothers fell. Around the pits at Petersburg, In the crater's mightv roar, Thoy held aloft our banner Whon tho field ran red with gore. At Rappahannock. Lexington, Malvern Hill and Seven Pines; Thoy wovo a wreath of glory ' That with luster ever shines. From Stone's River to Atlanta. They marched with solemn tread Where every hill and valley Drank the blood thoy freely shed. At ChancollorsviU'e and Antictam j Thoy faced tho galling fire X With patriotic devotion " ) That we always must admire. ' At Martinsburg, Pea Ridge, Mill 4 Springs. Yorktowu, Winchester and Bald ' inn, 1 Their heroic achievements Volumos in our history till.
