Monnett. former attorney-general of tho state of Ohio, spoke to a large and enthusiastic Democratic gathering at the Weber stake academy here tonight. Jesse William Knight, Democratic gubernatorial nominee, nom-inee, was also one of the attractions. Both delivered arguments In favor of the success of tho Democratic ticket, both local lo-cal and national. T. D. Johnson, chairman of tho Democratic Demo-cratic countv central committee, called tho meeting to order and Introduced Sam King of Salt Lake as chairman. In a brief address, tho chairman predicted Democratic success this year, and blamed all of the turmoil and strife in state poll-tics poll-tics to the retention of Apostle Reed Smoot In the United States Senate. Ho then Introduced air. Monnett, who spoko one and a half hours on the national issues. is-sues. Mr. Monnett refrained from discussing local Issues, but remarked that he was glad to see women suffrage allowed in Utah. 1 Jesse William Knight began his address bv declaring that ho appreciated the honor hon-or conferred upon him by the nomination, and he was not unmindful of what assistance as-sistance would be given him In tho campaign cam-paign which he largely attributed Lo tho Influence of his father. He ridiculed the recent communication directed to a Salt Lake afternoon paper by Sol Kimball, In which the latter predicted dire consequences to the Mormon people If the American party should acquire control of the state. A. S. Fuller, a Beaver county Democrat, Demo-crat, made an address on local option. He oxdoriated Fred J. Kelsel, the leading wholesale liquor dealer of this city, for the light, which is being made against local lo-cal option. |
