Show KERN IS CONFIDENT OF DEMOCRATIC VICTORY JERSEY CITY, N. J., Oct. 14. John W. Kern, Democratic nominee for vice-president, brought the first day of his eastern speaking campaign to a close with a speech to a large crowd in Phoenix hall in this city tonight. Two hours enrlier he addressed a tremendous crowd at Newark and earlier in tho day spoke to a good-sized good-sized audience, composed chiefly of business busi-ness men, In Elizabeth. Automobiles were utilized to whirl the nominee from place to place to fill his engagements. He left for New York lato tonight. In his speech hero tonight Mr. Kern, prophesying Democratic victory at the polls, said: "In 1S7C a mlghly contest was waged in this land and the candidates were Samuel J. Til'den and Thomas A. Hendricks. New York. New Jersey and Indiana cast the deciding vote In that election. In 1SS1 another similar fight was waged, and again New York, New Jersey and Indiana gave the vote that elected Grover Cleveland. Cleve-land. And history repeated itself in 1S02. And I come to you of the East from tnv home in Indiana to ask you to again join with us to bring about the success of the Democratic ticket, and I believe you will do It." |
