And in this we do not mean those who affiliate locally with the American party any niore than we ''. mean those few who have remained in the so-called regular organization or who will cast their first vote in Utah this year: X The American organization has nothing to do with national politics neither has the American press, save that these newspapers print the news without bias and v; without prejudice. Every man who hus a position of responsibility on The Tribune, The Telegram or Goodwin's Weekly, if he lived anywhere but in Utah, would give 2 t active support to Mr. Taft. The owners of these publications are, without exception, National Republicans. It is safo to say that three-fourths of the two hundred ? and more employees of these newspapers will either vote for Mr. Taft or will refrafn from voting for presidential electors. They desired to vote the "Taft-Libcral r ticket" because it was constructed to enable American-Republicans to vote for presidential electors and the American state and local ticket without scratching. t T3nt Senator Smoot, an apostle of the Mormon church, has directed that his three electoral candidates three puppets of the federal machine resign from the ! "Taft-Liberal ticket." He hopes, thereby, to force American citizens to vote for the ten Mormon missionaries who were nominated in Salt Lake county for the state 4- T legislature. There is no other reason than this. THE INTERESTS OF THE REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE HAVE BEEN ABSOLUTELY BETRAYED $ t IN THIS BOLD AND UNJUSTIFIABLE EFFORT TO GET VOTES FOR REED SMOOT. If t Smoot's personal newspaper has declared that the purpose of the Americans was to place TAFT ELECTORS ON THE BRYAN TICKET ! Was there ever X f a more unreasonable proposition stated than that? IF SUCH A THING HAD EVER BEEN SUGGESTED WHAT ADVANTAGE COULD THERE BE TO BRYAN X TO PUT TAFT ELECTORS ON A BRYAN TICKET? The "Mouth" must regard its readers as a most ignorant herd if it could expect any thoughtful person to be f. TC deceived by such a claim. T j The fact is THE REAL REPUBLICANS OF UTAH arc not thoso who follow the lead of the insanely ambitious apostle-senator and the malodrous federal ring. f. Jr Senator Smoot's newspaper is filled with libels of men who oppose the apostle. Not a line of argument is found supporting the Republican party's national platform, j- j It has sunk everything pertaining to national politics, though proclaiming itself to be the parly's champion, in order to secure for Smoot the election of a handful of -j- ! weak and pliant Mormon missionaries who are legislative candidates. 3 $ THESE LEGISLATIVE CANDIDATES ARE PLEDGED TO VOTE TO TAKE THE CONTROL OF THE SALT LAKE CITY POLICE AND FIRE DEPART- X MENTS OUT OF THE CITY'S KEEPING AND PLACE THOSE DEPARTMENTS IN THE HANDS OF A COMMISSION TO BE APPOINTED BY THE GOVERNOR. If And who do they desire the governor shall be? William Spry, the king bee of the federal gang! j; X Would this be a proper treatment of the majority of the people of this progressive city? SMOOT IS MAKING IT DIFFICULT FOR A MAN OR A WOMAN TO BE A REPUBLICAN NATIONALLY IN UTAH. He and the Fussies, Curlies, Kinkies, " Harry Josephs and the like are the beneficiaries of national Republican success, and it is going the limit for self-respecting Republicans to maintain their National f ? party allegiance with such an aggregation WITHOUT BEING TOLD THAT IN ORDER TO VOTE FOR TAFT THEY MUST SUPPORT SMOOT. ! " Is there not something wrong in this, Republicans of Utah, when the church Republican machine refuses to permit national Republicans to vote for Taft unless they vote as Smoot; shall dictate? Is there any wonder that there is a revolt, and that Americans insist that tho settlement of the tremendously important local X t question IS PARAMOUNT TO NATIONAL ISSUES? IF THE LOCAL ISSUE IS NOT REGARDED AS PARAMOUNT IN THIS STATE, WHY DOES SMOOT RE- V X FUSE TO PERMIT TAFT ELECTORS TO REMAIN ON THE "TAFT-LIBERAL TICKET?" t i American-Republicans will not be forced into the Smoot organization. Those who desire to vote for Taft will find the way to do so WITHOUT SUPPORTING T X THE SMOOT TICKET LOCALLY. Ample explanation will be given all who desire to do this, and, at the same time, vote a straight American ticket, from governor J; to constable. T t Friends of Taft should fully inform themselves on the manner of "scratching." It is not at all difficult, and no one should be deceived. The intelligence and ! j the patriotism of Rcpublican-Amaricaus will be brought to bear on this question, and they will help cover Smoot aud the federal gaug with au avalanche of votes on $ 4- the third of next month, j 31 American-Democrats will be enabled to vote a Bryan and local American ticket without scratching.
