P LUMBER RATES EFFECT THURSDAY Tariff in Utah Is Not Materially Affected liy tho Change. The new rate schedule from the northwest on lumber and its products to all territory- .west of the head of the lakes, Chicago and the Mississippi river goes into effect Thursda3 For the past year the lumber rates have been tho subject of much discussion and expensive litigation, and on which, in December last, tho entire interstate commerce commission sat in "Washington "Washing-ton for over ten days. Arguments pro and con were made by eminent legal talent, and the result was tho adjustment adjust-ment by the commission of tho tariff which becomes effective todav. The now tariff, known as 'No. 9S1, which is published in compliance with tho orders of tho interstate commerce commission, includes 410 pages. It is impossible to say what its effect will be in general working, but generally speaking it is fair and reasonable, in some cases a reduction being mado and in other cases an advance, but tho rates to Utah aro not materially affected. af-fected.
