Show GOES BACK ON KIMBAEL. Last Saturday tho Deseret News printed on its first page, under a scare head, a story and proffer of an afli-davit afli-davit to its truth, from Sol Kimball, to tho effect that some Gentile, now dead, had told him of a fiendish scheme to dispossess the Mormons of their property here, run them out of tho county, and enrich thieving Gentiles at tho expenso of the Saints. The Nows pretended to believe that stoo', aud it put it forth with every evi-denco evi-denco of good faith, so far as good faith can bo supposed to attach . to anything that is printed in tho columns col-umns of tho disreputable News. No one could possibb havo gathered from the publication any idea that tho Nows did not believo tho stor3 that Kimball Kim-ball told, or that the News considered it to bo an absolute fake. So far as appeared in tho publication, tho News endorsed it and considered it worthy of belief. Now, however (sec Deseret News ed- 1 itorial of Tuesday night), tho News says: "Wo hope that Mr. Kimball's story i6 not truo." That is, it "hopes" that Kimball lied. Truly a charitable "hope" for the church organ lo express ex-press with respect to a slor' which it sprung upon this public with every appearance of its own endorsement. But it does not need an 3- very great strengthening strength-ening of "hope" to como to the conclusion con-clusion that tho stoiy was an absoluto and ridiculous falsehood. And 3-et the News, in its Tuesday evening editorial, edito-rial, had the gall further to quote some unknown person, endorsing him as "a perfectb' reliablo witness," to tho effect ef-fect that "an individual was heard on a street car to say in answer to a question: 'I have lived in Utah for seven 3-ears, and I am going to remain re-main here until I seo every "Mormon" driven awa3' " That also is an absolute falsehood, the same as the Kimball story was. And the Nows might as well got its "hopcr" into operation by way of leading lo the expression of a "hope" later on that this apocr3-plml quotation is also untrue. Some individual heard that some other individual heard that somebod' said what tho News pretends to quote. The "reliable witness" does not claim to have heard an3bod3' sa' it, but he heard from somebod3 else that somebod3' said it. All of which is pretl3' punk stuff. It would reall' seem that persons of average intelligence, if thC3'' -ire going to get up lies at all, would get up lies that would have some plausibility about them, and that could not bo so casib" and so instantly disproved. What seuse is there in springing upon an intelligent communit3' such trash as tho Kimball letter, and such quotations as the ono referred to that was put forth edito-rialb" edito-rialb" by the News on Tuosda' night'? It simply debases whatever good opinion opin-ion auj- one might have had of that paper heretofore; although wo must confess that it would bo a prelt3' hardened hard-ened friend and advocato of the News whose good opinion would be able to survive its tactics at the bond election elec-tion and its present, tactics, as tho chief organ and twin liar of the Republican Re-publican part' iu its present campaign. |
