Show WOMAN SUfFRAGISTS PREFER I JAIL TO FURNISHING BAIL LONDON, Oct. 14. A great crowd surrounded the Bow street, police court this morning when the woman suffragists suffrag-ists and the men without -work, who were arrested yesterday during the dis; orders in front of tho houses of parliament, parlia-ment, were arraigned. In the throng wore many women wearing badges with the -words "vote for women." The three leaders, Mrs. Drummond, Mrs. Pankhurst and Miss Crystabel Pank-hurst, Pank-hurst, demanded a trial by .jury. Their cases were postponed until October 21. Polico Superintendent Wells testified that traffic had been disorganized for four hours aud that eight persons had been injured by the demonstrators. Miss Pankhurst acted as attorney for Mrs. Drummond. and Mrs. Pankhurst, and her cross-examination of Superintendent Superin-tendent Wells furnished much amusement; amuse-ment; for the spectators. Most of the other prisoners woro expected to give bond for their good behavior, willi the alternative of imprisonment for from ono to two months. As on previous occasions, oc-casions, tho women elected to go to jail. When' ono of them was offered her freedom on her personal recognizance, she said to tho presiding magistrate: "You won't el any of my money. I will go to prison. Down with As-quith." As-quith." Another declared' that she had not obstructed ob-structed the police; far from it, it was tho police who had obstructed her. |
