A trace or tho man was secured through a letter ho wrote to his wife a few months before sho camo to Butto to Join her husband Christian worked in Butto about two yearn ago and aftorward ho removed to Salt Lake, where ho Is said to have gone Into tho counterfeiting business with moro or less success until the place becamo too warm for him. and then ho camo to Butte Since coming to this city ho has been employed In the mines and Is sold to have been leading a respcctablo rfe. Jed Grant and Joe Smith, two young men quite well known In this city, were c.rrested last November on tho chnrge of passing, or attempting to pass, Bpuiious llvo and ten-dollar gold pieces. Both were later indicted on ono or more charges by tho Federal grand Jury and wore released on 41000 bonds each to await their trial. Tho name of Christian Is not known to local officers In connection with the ease, but It Is presumed that he was Interested In making the coins which wero used by Grant and Smith These coins were tho crudest kind of "counterfeits," having been merely coppers glided over, and attempts to pass them wero apparently appar-ently conllned to tne tcndoiioln district. |
