Show WITH THE WHEELMEN I The bicycle racing men arc actively 1 training for the cycle season At present pres-ent there arc about ten professionals training to forty amateurs Chapman and Lawson aho have been l training all winter are going faster than any of the local men J P Gunn Is faster than last l year and promises to be one of the leading l local riders Tod Caine Is not training yet and will no doubt feel the effect at the first meet Many of the riders are doing their training at the Salt Palace track while others are working at Liberty park A squad of men who are training for the road race ride at Liberty park every morning at 5 oclock The season promises to be a prosperous one w S H Sharman writes from Ogden that he will ride again this year and will commence his training next week He will come here every afternoon to train on the Salt Palace track and return re-turn to Ogden at night w Entries are coming In fast for the Decoration day road races promoted by J 1 P Gunn over the Lagoon course The road lacks 200 yards of being sixteen miles and will be known as the fifteen mile course Gunn expects to secure sixty entries for the race The roads arc hotter than ever before and itls expected ex-pected that several seconds will be knocked off the record which stands at 2S2D The prIzes will be placed on exhibition ex-hibition this week in Walkers store show window Gunn has concluded to buch the forty prizes he has secured into In-to ten which will make a handsome gift to the winner of every prize Overlook lug the dark horses the time prize lies between George Lucas A W Smith and W Samuelson of Provo f I k A C Mertens of St Paul the five 1 mile national champion of Q7 and Bobbie Walthour the Southern champion whose home Is In Atlanta Ga and who Is a faster man than John M Chapman are expected to arrive here In about three weeks These two riders are now at Newark N J but believe they can make more money racing here as the meets will be more frequent than In the East off the Na tional circuit Should these two men come Chapman and Lawson would not have the easy game of last year when they won as they pleased i A I Eddie Smith who left here a few weeks ago for Europe sailed on the 3rd on the St Louis and will arrive In Paris on the 9th Smith expects to do some racing In Paris and his work against the foreign amateurs will be of special interest a a d The Utah Messenger Boys road race scheduled for the 20th over the Gaidars park course has not been satisfactorily handicapped and this has brought 1 about dissension among the riders who have entered The messenger boys are getting up a petition for a new handi capper which should be a man who Is men who are training for the road rare The prizes have been placed on exhibi tion In the show window of George Mul lett Co C Q a A W Smith and Walter Bean will make a century run over the Spring yule course starting this morning at I 6 p l in if the weather is goo |
